Do I put Sleeping Beauty on my CV?!' Ballet dancers on their next steps, from midwifery to the House of Lords
"After the birth of my son, I came back as a different person. Although I could add a beautiful vulnerability to my work, there was such a pull on my heart, missing out on time with him when he was little."
"In my work now, when I see a woman who is in labour and in so much pain, looking at me with all this fear, if I can make her feel safe or even just listen to me and be present in the room, that is really great."
"Starting university in my 30s was a whole new ball game. In my first lecture, there was everyone on their laptops and I've got my book and pen, writing everything down, freaking out."
Lana Jones, a former principal dancer at the Australian Ballet, transitioned to midwifery after the birth of her son. She felt a strong pull to be present for her child while also missing the ballet community. After retiring in 2018, she enrolled in a midwifery course, facing challenges as a mature student. In her new role, she aims to provide comfort and safety to women in labor, finding fulfillment in helping others. The transition has been difficult but rewarding, as she seeks to redefine her identity beyond ballet.
