Colorado's wine industry, burgeoning since the late 1970s, features over 150 wineries, primarily in the Grand Valley AVA. Despite the unorthodox climate marked by high altitude and fluctuating temperatures, Colorado vintners have harnessed these conditions to create distinctive, cold-hardy varietals. Events like the Colorado Governor's Cup and Colorado Mountain Winefest celebrate the state's growing reputation. Notably, Carboy Winery's Kevin Webber emphasizes the adventurous and varied character of Colorado wines, asserting the state's potential to compete nationally.
At first glance Colorado seems like an unusual place to grow wine. Here, vignerons must contend with harsher climates, higher altitudes, and constantly fluctuating temperatures—but that's only pushed growers to be more creative.
Our goal was to put Colorado on the map and prove that we could make amazing wine from this region. There is an adventurous nature to Colorado wines that are fun and lively, and they are never the same year to year.
