Student-made wines debut at UC Davis after decades of legal barriers
Briefly

UC Davis viticulture and enology students can now sell wines they produce, a first for the university due to a new state law signed in 2020. Previously prohibited from selling wine because it is a public institution, the students’ creations can now be shared with the community through an affiliated nonprofit named Hilgard631. This change marks a significant shift after over a decade of legal maneuvering and represents a hands-on learning opportunity for students who craft, bottle, and label their own wine.
In 2020, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law that removed language barring UC Davis from selling wine, allowing for greater community access to student-made wines.
The university's viticulture and enology program finally allowed students to sell wine after more than 12 years of waiting for legislation and navigating legal hurdles.
