Smart glasses have attracted major investment but have produced little profit, functioning like a financial drain. The core obstacles have included bulky, uncomfortable designs, awkward social presence, and software that offered limited benefits. Chi Xu, CEO of Xreal and a longtime Google partner, says the industry is still losing money and that the work is difficult. He believes the market may be approaching an inflection point as hardware becomes smaller and software improves. Meta’s Ray-Ban partnership helped demonstrate strong unit sales, even though its Reality Labs division still loses heavily. Xu says success requires hardware, an operating system, and a compelling user interface.

"That's because it's very hard, what we're doing,"

"Now, however, industry insiders - including Xu - feel like their business has turned a corner and may be reaching an inflection point."
