The article discusses proper etiquette regarding inquiries about medical devices like walkers and the challenges faced by employees in a busy department store dressing room. While it's not outright inappropriate to ask someone about their walker, Miss Manners suggests sensitivity and context are important, particularly if you don’t share a similar experience. Additionally, the article highlights frustrations faced by dressing room attendants when customers exceed item limits, leaving them overwhelmed with garments to rehang.
Asking people about their medical devices is technically not, Miss Manners admits, inquiring into someone's medical condition which would be a no-no, but it is too nearly that to receive her blessing.
She would be slightly more receptive if you were using a similar device yourself, or if you were the person's doctor. Or lying prone and in need of assistance.
