Gym-goers are advised to remove wedding and engagement rings prior to workouts due to concerns about hygiene and potential damage. Experts highlight that rings can harbor bacteria and fungi from gym equipment, leading to skin irritations and infections. Additionally, the constant friction from heavy weights can damage the ring itself, causing scratches or loosened stones. Increased blood flow during exercise may also lead to swollen fingers, making rings uncomfortable or even dangerous if they do not fit correctly. Regular cleaning and maintenance of jewelry is also recommended.
Neil Ditta, a jewellery expert from Angelic Diamonds, said gyms are already notorious hotspots for bacteria and fungi, with sweaty surfaces and close contact making infection easy.
'Jewellery worn during exercise collects bacteria that can cause skin redness, rashes or infections,' he said. 'If your skin around the ring starts to look sore or inflamed, it is a clear sign to give your ring a break and clean it thoroughly.'
'The constant gripping and friction during workouts weakens the ring's band and can loosen stones,' Mr Ditta said. 'Damage may not be obvious straight away, but it builds up quickly over time.'
'Treadmill runners and lifters should remove their engagement and wedding rings to avoid bacteria buildup and prevent injury or damage to their jewelry,' experts recommend.
