Geno Auriemma, the UConn women's basketball coach, showed his emotional side during an interview after his team secured the national championship with an 82-59 victory over South Carolina. This title marks UConn's first since 2016, and Auriemma's connection to star Paige Bueckers was evident. He expressed immense pride and love for his players, particularly as Bueckers prepares to enter the WNBA draft. The coach highlighted the challenges and uncertainties faced throughout the season, emphasizing the significance of this championship win and his emotional investment in the team's journey.
"I love you, that's all I could say, I love you," Auriemma said about the moment while once again wearing his emotions on his sleeve.
"You just never know if you're going to be back in this situation again and there was so many times when I think we all questioned, have we been here too long?" Auriemma reflected.
"This is - they've all been gratifying, don't get me wrong - but this one here because of the way it came about and what's been involved, it's been a long time since I've been that emotional when a player has walked off the court."
