Effective January 1, 2020, Washington state will provide new parents with up to 16 weeks of paid family leave, establishing itself as a leader in parental leave policies among U.S. states. This program will allow individuals to take 12 weeks of leave post-birth, or 18 weeks for those facing pregnancy complications. To qualify, parents must have worked 820 hours in the previous year and contribute approximately $2 weekly to the leave fund. Advocates believe this initiative will encourage other states to adopt similar policies, addressing gaps in parental leave across the country.
"It's a benefit for the people who could take the leave, but it's also a benefit for employers. We're hoping it will help people recover faster and return to work faster."
"Through the state's Paid Family and Medical Leave program, individuals will be able to take 12 weeks of paid leave after the birth of their child, while couples will be able to take a combined 16 weeks."
