Washington state crews find body of another victim in paper mill explosion
A tank holding more than 500,000 gallons of white liquor collapsed at Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company in Longview, Washington, expelling caustic chemicals that overturned pickup trucks and damaged on-site buildings. White liquor can cause severe burns on contact and lung damage from inhaled vapors. Recovery has been slow and methodical because remaining chemicals and other industrial hazards make parts of the site unsafe. Crews avoid the closest zone to the tank, coordinate with engineers on which damaged buildings can be entered, and must decontaminate remains and personnel before identification by the coroner. Soldiers and air personnel supported first responders, and the cause remains under investigation.
