Washington, DC demolishes Black Lives Matter mural and plaza
Briefly

The 'Black Lives Matter' mural on 16th Street in Washington, DC, is set to be removed after being a symbol of racial justice since its creation in 2020. Initially designated a permanent installation by Mayor Muriel Bowser, the change comes after Republican representative Andrew Clyde threatened to withhold federal funding unless the mural's removal occurred and the area was renamed 'Liberty Plaza'. Mayor Bowser cited the need to avoid distractions due to congressional pressure, although plans for new murals celebrating the US's semiquincentennial are set for 2026.
The mural inspired millions of people and helped our city through a very painful period, but now we can't afford to be distracted by meaningless congressional interference.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser previously declared the mural a permanent fixture, but has now announced its removal to avoid federal funding interference.
