A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration must release $5 billion earmarked for electric vehicle charger development in various states. This decision comes after 16 states filed a lawsuit against the administration for blocking funds approved by Congress under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Judge Tana Lin determined that the Trump administration acted beyond its authority in freezing the funds. While the ruling allows for funding release in 14 states, it denied similar relief for D.C., Minnesota, and Vermont due to insufficient evidence of irreparable harm.
When the Executive Branch treads upon the will of the Legislative Branch, and when an administrative agency acts contrary to law, it is the Court's responsibility to remediate the situation and restore the balance of power.
The Trump administration, in February, directed states to stop spending money for electric vehicle charging under the program, part of a broader push to roll back environmental policies.
