Alex Ovechkin aims to tie or surpass Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal record of 894 goals as the Washington Capitals play the San Jose Sharks. Ovechkin, at 38, has 886 goals, needing eight to tie and nine to break the record with only 15 games left in the season. The matchup is historical as it recalls Gretzky's previous record-breaking moments. While anticipation surrounds Ovechkin's challenge, local excitement is also driven by the Sharks' playoff race. The Sharks, in their third season, changed the local hockey narrative after struggling in earlier years.
"It was always a wild atmosphere when the Kings came in with Gretzky and there was always an anticipation," said Dan Rusanowsky, the Sharks' radio voice since their inception.
"As far as the local fans were concerned, it was more about the playoff race and their interest in the Sharks than the historical context of Gretzky's chase of Howe," recalled Mike Weaver.
