As Alex Ovechkin approaches a historic milestone, fans of the Washington Capitals, especially in Ijamsville, MD, are expressing their admiration in unique ways. A local family dedicated a large neon goal counter visible from afar on Ijamsville Road, sparked by the family's shared love for hockey. The family, led by John Harper, crafted the display using over 50 feet of rope lights. Harper's sons, Ryley and McGarity, inspired him, having played hockey in the area since childhood. This tribute shows the vibrant community spirit around Ovechkin’s accomplishments.
"Some of the neighbors thought it was a political statement," John Harper, the creator of the tribute, told RMNB, laughing. "But if you know, you know."
"They started to play ice hockey in the Frederick area when they were six-years-old for SkateFrederick," Harper said. "They ended up becoming great players and played for Team Maryland..."
"I was going to do the goal count to show how many to beat the record, however..."
