Darren Pang faced backlash from Washington Capitals fans after labeling Alex Ovechkin a "one-trick pony" during TNT's broadcast. While he acknowledged Ovechkin's scoring prowess, fans interpreted Pang's remark as disrespectful, particularly given Ovechkin's milestones in the game. The Capitals capitalized on the controversy by humorously referencing Ovechkin's achievements in a social media post. In a follow-up interview, Pang clarified his comments, emphasizing the need to showcase Ovechkin's diverse scoring abilities beyond just one method, indicating his intention was misinterpreted.
The game moves very fast and I'm not sure exactly when someone thought that I said 'one-trick pony' but I will say this, we did a clip early in the game and I asked our producers there at TNT, I said, 'Hey fellas why don't you put together a clip, and people can watch this because it was very early in the game, of Ovi scoring in different areas of the ice.'
One trick pony scores his 885th career goal and records his 1,599th career point.
