During a recent game at UBS Arena, Alex Ovechkin was close to passing Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goals record of 894 goals. To commemorate the event, fan Eddie Twomey decorated his jeep with Washington Capitals flags, an Ovechkin mannequin, and a goat wearing a Gretzky sweater. Twomey, who has cherished memories of Gretzky's career, aimed to creatively represent Ovechkin's impending achievement. His display also reflected a personal connection, having witnessed Gretzky's historic 802nd goal back in 1994, marking the beginning of his journey as the G.O.A.T.
"This has been in my head for, I don't know, five years trying to figure out how to make this work," Twomey told ESPN.
"The Cup is easy because you can understand that. But this is understanding Gretzky," he said.
"I was at the Great Western Forum when Gretzky scored his 802nd career goal to pass Gordie Howe for career NHL goals in 1994," Twomey recalled.
Twomey decided to tell a story, and it's sort of a personal one.
