Microsoft laid off over 9000 employees this week, resulting in the cancellation of significant Xbox Game Studios projects like the Perfect Dark reboot and Rare’s Everwild. One notable title was the MMORPG codenamed 'Blackbird', created by the Elder Scrolls Online team at ZeniMax Online Studios. Although Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer enjoyed the game earlier this year, it was abruptly canceled amidst the layoffs. The game featured a sci-fi, noir aesthetic similar to Blade Runner and emphasized vertical movement with abilities like air-dashing and grappling hooks.
According to Bloomberg's sources, Spencer was so enamored with the game when he played it in March that Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty had to physically take the controller from him so they could continue a meeting.
