A new report highlights potential consequences if President Trump reinstates tariffs on video game consoles after a 90-day pause. The Consumer Technology Association forecasts a significant price increase, estimating a hike up to 69.4% on consoles, which could cost consumers an additional $12 billion and reduce U.S. purchases by 73%. The ramifications threaten not only console sales but also the broader gaming ecosystem, impacting game releases and developers dependent on hardware sales.
"The imposition of new Administration tariffs on U.S. imports of video game consoles boosts their costs significantly," the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) states. "Video games are not exempt from reciprocal tariffs and face tariffs up to 145%."
"American consumers would pay $12 billion more for video game consoles," the CTA claims. "As a result, U.S. consumers reduce overall [game console] purchases by 73 percent."
