Voice actors in SAG-AFTRA are striking since July 2024 for protections against AI exploitation in the video game industry. Recently, two characters in HoYoverse's Zenless Zone Zero were recast following original actors’ withdrawal due to these ongoing negotiations. SAG-AFTRA executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland highlighted pending issues in contract proposals, particularly concerning consent and compensation rights for actor replicas created through AI. The union aims for an agreement that safeguards against unauthorized use while acknowledging the complexities of blended voice performances.
Though progress has been made and agreements have been reached on certain provisions since we launched our strike last year, the last proposal the bargaining group made is still filled with alarming loopholes that will leave our members vulnerable to A.I. abuse.
SAG-AFTRA is seeking a contract that would let employers use new performances by voice actors to craft AI-powered replicas, but only if actors consent to the process and are compensated for their use.
