Bongo Cat, a free idle game by Irox Games, has surged in popularity, consistently ranking high on Steam's concurrent player charts, yet it struggles financially. CEO Marcel Zurawka disclosed in an interview that despite having over 150,000 concurrent players, the game earned only $2,000 in its first month of March, with earnings subsequently declining to $2,800 by June. Zurawka emphasizes that the intent was not profit but to create an accessible companion tool for users, with more than half of income derived from microtransactions and marketplace sales.
"Some people said, 'Oh you're now rich.' That's bullshit. I didn't make it for the money at all."
"It's not even paying a developer for us. If you just look at the numbers, it's actually losing us money in the end."
