Ubisoft Shows Off Generative AI Game Demo Called Teammates
"We are making great strides in applying Gen AI to high-value use cases that bring tangible benefits to our players and teams... It's as big [of] a revolution for our industry as the shift to 3D. And we have everything to lead on this front."
"generative AI-driven gameplay can shape a new generation of more interactive and engaging games."
"Our role is to give AI meaning, to narrativize it, ensuring logic doesn't replace soul. We designed Teammates to leave space for player creativity, finding that balance between emotion and unpredictability."
Ubisoft unveiled Teammates, an R&D first-person shooter prototype that uses generative AI to enable real-time, voice-driven NPC responses and adaptive gameplay. The prototype is being tested by a small number of players and includes a companion character, Jaspar, that assists with obstacles and offers hints or strategies while interacting directly with players. Teammates incorporates a custom API with guardrails to reduce AI hallucinations and control behavior. The company positions generative AI as a transformative shift comparable to 3D, focusing on narrative design to balance logic, emotion, player creativity, and unpredictability in interactive stories.
