Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, the lead writer for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, transitioned from finance to pursue her creative aspirations during the COVID-19 lockdown. Her journey began with a chance encounter on Reddit, answering a call for voice-actor assistance from game designer Guillaume Broche. Despite initial collaboration on a smaller game, they were encouraged to expand their vision, leading to the creation of Expedition 33. Svedberg-Yen's extensive reading, particularly The Wheel of Time series, greatly influenced the game's world-building, and much of the original concept was reimagined to fit a more ambitious narrative.
"We were trying to be realistic and that kind of limited the scope of it. So we went back to the drawing board, and came up with Expedition 33."
"The only connections to the scrapped steampunk game and the Belle Ãpoque-inspired RPG they eventually made are a few names - Lune and Maelle both made the cut."
