The animated film 'Flow', now streaming on Max, features a diverse cast of animals on a tiny boat amidst rising waters. Originally a student film focused solely on a cat's fear of water, director Gints Zilbalodis evolved the story to highlight themes of trust and collaboration among the cat and its fellow animals. Key character changes, like introducing a secretary bird for authority, helped shape the narrative, making it vital for the cat to learn to rely on others in a shared journey.
"I decided to revisit this idea and make it really more about the cat's relationship with other characters and other animals," he says.
"The cat needed to look up to this bird in the beginning. It needed to have this authority and presence."
"It was my first film that I worked with a big team, and I wanted to tell a story about a character who has to learn how to trust others."
