The shutdown of Volition in 2023 after three decades raises uncertainties about the future of the Saints Row franchise. Saber Interactive's founder, Matthew Karch, pointed out that the costly nature of the development team and a lack of clear direction led to the studio's downfall. The recent reboot of Saints Row in 2022 did not meet commercial expectations, even though Embracer's CEO remained optimistic. Karch argued the video game industry must evolve, as excessively high-budget games are becoming increasingly unsustainable and leading to widespread layoffs in the industry.
"The Saints Row team is gone. They were so expensive for what they were. They didn't know what they were building. They didn't have any real direction."
"The days of throwing money at games other than maybe the GTAs of the world is over. This business needs to mature. If it doesn't, the whole business is in trouble."
