Heart Machine's upcoming title, Possessor(s), marks a notable shift for the studio toward traditional storytelling and a new 2D aesthetic. The game is a metroidvania-style search-action adventure that combines fast-paced side-scrolling mechanics reminiscent of Metroid with the challenging gameplay found in Dark Souls. Unlike previous Heart Machine titles that leaned toward abstract storytelling, Possessor(s) features a more linear narrative with engaging characters and dialogue. Despite its inspirations from beloved games, it manages to maintain a distinct and fresh approach, wrapped in a visually stunning urban-horror atmosphere that promises continuous discovery and excitement.
Although it pulls inspiration from some of my favorite titles and I'd argue I didn't see anything that reinvents or refines its genres, its urban-horror setting, lustrous art direction, overall tone, and budding narrative feel both distinctly Heart Machine and like a fresh endeavor.
Possessor(s) marks a shift to the second dimension for Heart Machine and combines fast-paced, side-scrolling action (a la Metroid) with Dark Souls-inspired mechanics to create a tense, brutal, and gorgeous adventure game.
