Oscar-Winning Director Guillermo del Toro Reveals His Favorite Games, Including A "Masterpiece"
""When [Kratos] fights Odin [in God of War Ragnarok] and Odin keeps coming back and he looks like a Peaky Blinders brawler. He beats the crap out of Kratos. What a great video game. And the way they use the budget of data on the console to create atmospheric dispersion and light. That is lit like a film," he said."
"Following the cancellations of Insane and Silent Hills, del Toro said he gave up on trying to make a video game. "I have proven to be the albatross of video games," he said. "I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else's life, I will"
Guillermo del Toro named several favorite games, including God of War, BioShock, Death Stranding, Metal Gear Solid, Red Dead Redemption, Left 4 Dead, and Shadow of the Colossus. He praised God of War for its cinematic combat and technical lighting and called BioShock the most immersive experience he has played. He described Metal Gear Solid as having the best universe and labeled Shadow of the Colossus a poetic, tragic masterpiece. Del Toro previously worked on the game Insane with Volition until THQ canceled it, hinted at Silent Hills, and ultimately stepped away from making games after those cancellations.
