Romero Games' new first-person shooter project, initially announced in 2022, has been canceled after three years of development. Employees attributed the cancellation to recent massive layoffs at Xbox, with a designer describing the project as innovative and fun. Studio director Brenda Romero confirmed the team received news about funding loss due to a strategic decision at a high level and is currently evaluating next steps. The future of Romero Games remains uncertain, having previously developed Empire of Sin and unofficial Doom episodes.
Back in 2022, John Romero of Doom fame announced he was working on a new first-person shooter IP in Unreal Engine 5 for a "major publisher." Three years later, the studio says it's canceled.
Brenda Romero stated that the team found out about the loss of funding due to a "strategic decision made at a high level," and they are evaluating next steps while trying to care for the staff.
The lead level designer on the untitled FPS expressed that the cancellation was a massive and unexpected hit on a Project that was innovative, going strong, and fun.
It's unclear if Romero Games will survive the cancellation; the studio was previously known for the strategy RPG Empire of Sin and unofficial new Doom episodes.
