Niantic has announced plans to create a Large Geospatial Model, expanding on the data collected from Pokemon Go players, who provide unique views of buildings.
The company aims to help computers perceive and navigate the physical world, making Large Geospatial Models comparable to the Large Language Models used by companies like OpenAI.
Through the Pokemon Playgrounds feature, players have contributed to scanning 10 million locations worldwide, significantly aiding in the development of this geospatial model.
The model currently shows significant data collected mostly from North America and Europe, with large parts of Africa, Asia, and South America remaining uncaptured.
