Microsoft is advancing its Edge browser capabilities for gamers and is introducing a new in-game AI assistant called Copilot for Gaming. Unveiled by Xbox's VP of gaming AI, Fatima Kardar, this feature aims to help players navigate difficult game sections and provide timely coaching when needed. Demonstrated in titles like Overwatch 2 and Minecraft, Copilot offers contextual advice without disrupting gameplay. Targeted initially at Xbox Insiders, the project focuses on enhancing the player experience by being present only when required, reflecting a thoughtful approach to gaming AI.
In Overwatch 2, Copilot told the player how they died, and how they can counter that tactic by choosing another character and resetting their strategy.
Kardar explained that the AI's presence is about helping at the right moments: 'It's not just about AI showing up to help you... it cannot show up in the middle of the game.'
'Gaming is the only form of entertainment where you can get stuck, so... that's where you want something to show up and say, 'actually, this is what [this] looks like.'
Microsoft's goal with Copilot is to assist players with difficult parts of their games, enhancing their experience without being intrusive.
