EA has generously released the source code for four legacy Command & Conquer titles, enhancing video game preservation efforts. These include the original Command & Conquer and Command & Conquer: Generals, among others. The restoration was spearheaded by EA's Brian Barnes and community member Luke Feenan. Additionally, EA is adding Steam Workshop support to newer Command & Conquer games, along with modding tools that empower fans to create new content and improve existing features in older titles, providing fresh opportunities for both new and veteran developers in the gaming community.
In an uncharacteristically charitable move, EA has just made the source code for four of its legacy Command & Conquer titles freely available to the public under the GPL license.
Having free versions of the original code to work with is a huge benefit to video game preservation and future developers.
EA is bringing Steam Workshop support to its more contemporary Command & Conquer titles, complete with a modding support pack.
These modding tools will let users make new maps and assets along with more fundamental changes to these older titles.
