Microsoft laid off approximately four percent of its workforce, affecting over 9,000 employees, with significant impacts on its gaming division. Jobs were slashed at multiple first-party studios and several projects, including the Perfect Dark reboot, were cancelled. Turn 10 Studios lost its entire Forza Motorsport team, while Romero Games was fully closed. Despite the layoffs, the Forza Horizon series may continue, although questions remain about the future of the Forza Motorsport franchise inspired by the statement of a former staff member. The closure of Romero Games signifies the end of a studio founded by noteworthy industry figures.
"Turn 10 Studios has shuttered the Forza Motorsport space and the team is no more," Russell said in a Facebook post on Friday. "A very sad day for one of the best car racing video games. I loved my time there."
"The legacy will stay, even if there is no future for the game," Russell said, highlighting uncertainty surrounding the future of the Forza Motorsport franchise.
"Horizon is going to continue... for now," Russell said, reassuring fans that the Forza Horizon series will proceed despite the Forza Motorsport team being disbanded.
Romero Games confirmed last week that it had been completely closed following Microsoft's latest layoffs, marking the end of a studio founded by industry veterans.
