Documenting Japan's classic arcades before it's too late
Briefly

Photographer Víctor Alonso launched a project to document Japan's classic arcades, which have been in decline despite emerging new gaming experiences. His book, 'The Last Game Centers,' features 25 iconic locations and captures their essence as part of gaming heritage. The project stemmed from his ongoing interest in photography and arcade culture, particularly during his month-long journey across Japan in 2023 after COVID restrictions lifted. Alonso aims to share these nostalgic spaces through his work, which is currently available mainly in Spanish and Japanese.
I traveled for a whole month across Japan, mainly Tokyo and Osaka, with a clear mission: to document as many classic arcades as possible.
The classic arcade, where you could drop a couple quarters to play the latest game, has certainly seen better days.
