Discord is launching a new Social SDK for game developers to integrate its social features directly into their titles. This move seeks to provide more seamless connections among players and enhance the social experience in gaming. The SDK gives developers ready-made tools for features like friends' lists, benefiting especially indie developers. Additionally, it enables Discord to pull game data to enrich its app functionality, creating a more interactive environment for gamers, where invites and communication can become much more dynamic and contextualized, even without a Discord account.
Games have never been more social but the tools for connecting with friends and fellow fans across the gaming realm are still surprisingly fractured.
Discord hopes to fix that with a new Social SDK it's making available to developers to allow them to integrate the platform's tools and perks directly into their games.
The SDK— which is already being used by Theorycraft Games, Facepunch Studios, and 1047 Games—accomplishes this goal of deeper integration with games in two ways.
Players won't need to have a Discord account to use in-game features, but linking accounts will be the main way this extra functionality gets unlocked.
