Celeste Devs Next Project Earthblade Officially Canceled
Briefly

Extremely Ok Games has officially canceled its next project, Earthblade, which was first announced in 2021. Director Maddy Thorson shared that disagreements over the Celeste IP rights contributed to the decision, and that a key team member, Pedro Medeiros, left the project, prompting a reevaluation. Thorson expressed a feeling of relief, acknowledging the overwhelming pressure after Celeste's success. As the development team is now shrinking and shifting towards smaller projects, Thorson hopes they can learn from the challenges faced during Earthblade's development.
Celeste's success applied pressure on us to deliver something bigger and better with Earthblade, and that pressure is a large part of why working on it has become so exhausting.
The split with Pedro has given us the clarity to see that we have lost our way, and the opportunity to admit defeat.
Scaling the team up after Celeste's success was a failure, but I am hopeful that the studio will regain its footing and learn lessons from Earthblade's development.
Earthblade was first revealed back in 2021, and was slated for a 2024 release, but the lack of updates led to its eventual cancelation.
