Microsoft's upcoming RPG, Avowed, developed by Obsidian, is set for release on February 18. Contrary to many RPGs today, Avowed utilizes large, defined zones instead of an open world. This design choice, according to regional director Berto Ritger, enhances pacing and player experience, allowing developers to track player choices effectively. Narrative designer Kate Dollarhyde supports this approach, noting that it simplifies pacing for players by providing a structured narrative flow. Avowed will be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch, alongside future games like The Outer Worlds 2.
"We know roughly what you've done before you've gone to the next thing. It's still a very open structure within those zones..." - Berto Ritger
"Having these zones that happen in sequence means we always know what content you've just come from on the critical path." - Kate Dollarhyde
