After studying filmmaking and animation at NYU, I went on to work in digital media (sometimes called 'new media'), contributing to online and offline multimedia design, 2-D animation, motion graphics, and more for various clients.
In his semi-retirement, Martin chose to return to his passion of illustration, focusing on character-driven images while moving away from his previous political/social commentary work, expressing his desire to be recognized as a 'late bloomer' in the field.
Martin aims to keep his illustrations for West Side Rag personal and local, different from his past work that often contained political and social commentary, showcasing his transition to a simpler, more intimate style of artwork.
Gary B. Martin has been living on the Upper West Side for over 30 years, and his illustrations for West Side Rag capture the essence of the neighborhood and New York City through his unique artistic vision.
