On March 5, 2025, an 81-year-old woman perished in a devastating fire at a West Village apartment building. Firefighters arrived promptly, battling heavy smoke and ultimately controlling the fire by 8:30 a.m. Despite their efforts to revive her on the street, she was pronounced dead. The incident elicited a tragic reaction from her daughter, who was emotionally supported by first responders. Preliminary reports suggest the fire could have stemmed from an electrical fault, but the cause is still under investigation by Fire Marshals.
Firefighters rushed to 142 Waverly Place, between 6th Avenue and Grove Street, at 7:20 a.m. on March 5 after smoke started pouring out of a 5-story building. The victim's daughter fell into the arms of firefighters, weeping profusely.
About 12 units and 60 fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene. The fire was placed under control just after 8:30 a.m.
Sources familiar with the investigation report that the blaze may have stemmed from an electrical issue. However, Fire Marshals have yet to officially determine the cause.
A neighbor walking her dog told amNewYork Metro, 'I didn't see any flames, I just saw smoke, I watched them [firefighters] break the windows out.'
