The 4 superpowers of a content designer
"Unlike our flashy cousins, product/UX designers or the tech-savvy dev crowd, our superpowers are a bit more... well, understated. And if I'm being honest, I don't think content designers do a good job of articulating what they do, which is ironic, given that content designers are shaping the user experience in ways that are subtle, powerful, and, dare I say, heroic. Content designers solve user problems through simplified content crafting experiences that guide, inform, and engage users."
"Empathy is our origin story. You see, we don't just write for users, no, we become them. In order for us to write and create clear, simple content, we step into the user's shoes (or screen readers, or low-bandwidth mobile connections) and feel what they feel. When someone gets stuck trying to complete a task on a website or app, we don't just rewrite an error message; we rewrite the experience, and within reason, try to create an empathic relation, helping the user where possible."
Content designers are often under-recognized compared to product designers and developers, yet they shape user experiences in subtle but powerful ways. They use empathy to step into users' contexts, including assistive technologies and low-bandwidth situations, to feel user pain points. Content designers simplify complex journeys, rewrite experiences rather than single messages, and anticipate pain points through user research and data. They act as user advocates, information architects, collaborators, and strategists who guide, inform, and engage users. Emotional investment arises when bad experiences are noticed and fixes are possible but experts are brought in too late.
