Samuel Wilkinson's Sorpresa chandelier, designed in collaboration with Astep, introduces an innovative folding mechanism, expanding from a compact size to over 43 inches. The design, inspired by traditional collapsible objects, allows users to experience the unveiling of the light as it takes shape. Made from recycled materials, it promotes sustainability through easy disassembly at the end of its lifecycle. Sorpresa minimizes common installation frustrations, presenting a delicate aesthetic that enhances any space whether on or off, embodying a subtle integrity in design.
The intention was to give Sorpresa a strong yet subtle personality when both on and off. When off, the light source nearly disappears within the lamp but still revealing the distinctive frame, when on, the light source is presented like a floating orb in center of the volume.
I wanted to create a piece that would intrigue. As its name suggests, the essence of the lamp is 'surprise'. We looked at various collapsible objects for inspiration and found a traditional shaker wool winder.
