South Carolina state government will implement uniform remote work rules across all agencies. New employees and executive-level staff are barred from telecommuting. Approved employees may work remotely up to two days per week, with specific prohibited day combinations. Agencies must have telecommuting policies approved by the state's human resources department, which can revoke remote-work privileges for noncompliance or quality impacts. Employees must complete one year of service before becoming eligible for telework. Agency directors and their direct reports cannot telecommute. Employees with unsatisfactory performance reviews must work in person. Remote work was used during the COVID-19 pandemic and employees were recalled in March 2021.
