US Supreme Court grills Trump administration over birthright citizenship
Briefly

The US Supreme Court is considering a case involving President Trump's January 20 order that seeks to eliminate birthright citizenship, which has been in place for over a century. This ruling could determine the extent to which lower federal courts can block such executive actions. Outside the courthouse, protests highlighted the importance of birthright citizenship, with activists asserting that any ruling against it would undermine the nation’s foundational principles. Legal experts warn that the court’s decision could significantly alter the landscape of judicial checks on executive power.
"We are here at the highest court in the land because a fundamental promise of America is under attack. And we are here to say not on our watch," said Ama Frimpong, pointing to the significance of birthright citizenship.
"Legal experts have also said a ruling limiting federal courts' ability to order a national or universal injunction to block Trump's executive actions would in and of itself be transformative," noted Al Jazeera's Heidi Zhou-Castro from outside the courthouse.
