US renewable energy has tripled in a decade but Trump cancels almost $8bn in projects
Briefly

A recent report by Environment America highlights the dramatic increase in renewable energy capacity in the US, with solar, wind, and geothermal energy generation more than tripling in the last decade. This transition has considerably reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved the resilience of the energy system, as well as preventing numerous deaths due to pollution. However, there is concern over the current political climate that may impede further progress, as the Trump administration begins to reverse federal climate policies.
The combined power generated by solar, wind, and geothermal in the US has more than tripled over the past decade, slashing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy resilience.
Despite the significant growth in renewable energy, the challenging political climate raised concerns among environmentalists about the dismantling of federal policies aimed at addressing the climate crisis.
In 2024, solar energy production was nearly eight times higher than a decade earlier, powering the equivalent of 28 million homes, reflecting unprecedented growth in the sector.
Wind energy production also saw remarkable growth, supplying power for 42 million homes in 2024, showcasing a doubling of capacity over the past ten years.
