The Trump administration's attempt to unseal grand jury transcripts related to Jeffrey Epstein is failing. Attorney General Pam Bondi was instructed to produce these transcripts amid backlash following revelations in The Wall Street Journal. However, U.S. District Judge Robin L. Rosenberg denied the Justice Department's request, citing grand jury secrecy rules. The DOJ's rationale included public interest, but experts deemed the move performative. Epstein’s previous 2007 plea agreement and his death in jail further complicate the cases against him and Ghislaine Maxwell.
Less than a week later, one of the requests has already been denied.
U.S. District Judge Robin L. Rosenberg said in a 12-page ruling on Wednesday that she couldn't grant the DoJ's request, citing grand jury secrecy rules mandated by the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.
DOJ acknowledged its request to unseal materials in Florida likely would violate the court's longstanding precedent but encouraged Rosenberg to consider it because of the 'significance of the matter.'
Legal experts like Elie Honig quickly dismissed the effort, explaining that it was performative and would almost certainly produce little if any new information.
