""The meeting is a first step, but only a first step. We need a serious negotiation," Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press.""
""If it has to shut down, it'll have to shut down," Trump said Friday. "But they're the ones that are shutting down government.""
""Chuck Schumer said a few months ago that a government shutdown would be chaotic, harmful and painful. He's right, and that's why we shouldn't do it," Thune, a South Dakota Republican, said Sunday on "Meet the Press.""
Democratic and Republican congressional leaders are meeting with President Donald Trump in a last effort to prevent a government shutdown. Funding legislation must be passed by Congress and signed by the president by Tuesday night to avoid temporary closures and furloughs of nonexempt federal employees. Republicans are urging approval of legislation that largely maintains current funding levels, while Democrats insist on using leverage to force consideration of legislation extending health care benefits. President Trump has signaled he expects a shutdown if agreement cannot be reached and the administration warned of potential permanent layoffs during a funding lapse.
