In March Trump threatened a 200% tariff on European wine and alcohol, which would have tripled prices of imports like Merlot and Champagne. The tariff did not happen then, but a similar threat reemerged at Davos 2025 after Trump proposed a self-styled "Board of Peace" to oversee his 20-point Gaza plan. The proposed board includes Marco Rubio, Tony Blair, Jared Kushner, and invited Netanyahu and Putin. French President Emmanuel Macron refused to join, saying the board "goes beyond the framework of Gaza" and raises questions about United Nations principles. French officials called the tariff threat blackmail.
