US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation raising the H-1B visa application fee to $100,000. The H-1B program permits highly skilled foreign nationals to legally work in the United States and is commonly used by technology companies to fill roles difficult to staff with US citizens or permanent residents. India and China have been the largest beneficiaries of the program. Employers typically bear H-1B fees, and the new fee will be charged in addition to existing visa fees. Administration officials framed the increase as a measure to discourage hiring foreign workers and encourage hiring and training Americans.
