The US has been watching DeepSeek since late 2023 and still has a way to beat it, Biden's former AI advisor says
Briefly

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI firm, has been under U.S. government scrutiny since late 2023, with concerns about its rapid advancements and impact on the AI market. Ben Buchanan, a former special AI advisor to the Biden administration, noted that while DeepSeek's technological capabilities are impressive, the media hype might be overstated. Although the company is achieving significant algorithmic efficiency, it faces limitations similar to its competitors, primarily due to computing power constraints. Buchanan emphasized the importance of chip controls and acknowledges the growing competition from China in the AI sector.
We had been watching DeepSeek in the White House since November 2023 or thereabouts, when they put out their first coding system.
There's no doubt that DeepSeek engineers are extremely talented, and they got better and better at their systems throughout 2024.
DeepSeek is doing exactly the same kind of algorithmic efficiency work as other AI companies, like OpenAI and Anthropic.
And this should be a reminder that chip controls are important, China is a worthy competitor here, and we shouldn't take anything for granted.
