A year after a bipartisan vote supporting Ukraine, pro-Ukraine Republicans like Senator Thune are now noticeably silent about Trump’s deference to Putin. While Thune previously emphasized the importance of American leadership in aiding Ukraine against Russian aggression, the current environment sees the GOP largely quiet as Trump's administration shifts its stance, indicating a possible sidelining of Ukraine in negotiations. This shift marks a departure from the party’s historical stance against Moscow, suggesting a capitulation to Trump’s influence and an uncertain future for Ukrainian support from the U.S.
America cannot retreat from the world stage. American leadership is desperately needed now more than I think any time in recent history, and we need to make sure that Ukraine has the weaponry and the resources that it needs to defeat the Russians.
The party that once prided itself on standing up to Moscow has bowed to a president who himself is bowing to an adversary.
