Texas Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Sheryl Cole, boarded a private plane to Chicago to avoid a Texas House vote aimed at further gerrymandering the state. Their strategic departure involved about 50 members who intended to deny the GOP-led House a quorum for official business, thereby delaying redistricting efforts aimed at gaining seats in the 2026 midterm elections. Cole asserted that the Texas GOP's actions equated to stealing power from the people, while critics argued it was hypocritical to escape to a state with its own gerrymandering issues.
Cole stated, 'I'm heading to Chicago right now to stop this rigged-redistricting process. We can't allow Donald Trump and Greg Abbott to steal power from the people with these proposed congressional maps.'
Political pundit Andrew Kaczynski remarked, 'Was there nobody on the PR side who was like maybe we shouldn't go to one of the most corrupt gerrymandered states in the country?'
Chuck Todd said, 'The part that I think is sort of bad, I think it's a bad look for a party that claims to be always trying to be a protector of democracy, is to hole up in a state that gerrymanders, the state of Illinois.'
