Taiwan leader promises to counter China 'infiltration' DW 03/13/2025
Briefly

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te accuses China of escalating intimidation tactics aimed at undermining Taiwan's independence. In a press briefing, he highlighted an increase in infiltration and espionage from Beijing, claiming that these actions aim to absorb Taiwan into China’s territory. Lai emphasized concerns about the impact of China's influence campaigns on Taiwan’s democracy and freedom. The Taiwanese government is considering stronger legal measures to counter these attempts. Tensions have heightened due to China's military drills and various campaigns to assert its claim over Taiwan.
They (China) are carrying out activities such as division, destruction, and subversion from within us.
Many are worried that our country, hard-earned freedom and democracy and prosperity will be lost bit by bit due to these influence campaigns and manipulation.
Lai said Taiwan needed to 'step up our legal safeguards to prevent and detect' efforts by Beijing to 'subvert' our autonomy.
Beijing considers the democratically governed island as part of its own territory.
