"It's been a pleasure working with you for the past three years you've shown compassion, you've shown an effort to make our community a little bit better, said Sunnyvale Mayor Larry Klein to Mehlinger at Tuesday's meeting. I look forward to the partnership."
"Over the years, Richard has shown a consistency and genuine commitment to the people in his district, said Sunnyvale resident Valerie Suares. He approaches difficult issues with both conviction and fairness."
"I want to thank my colleagues for putting their faith in me That oath is a heavy thing, said Mehlinger. It means we're to work to"
Richard Mehlinger was sworn in as Sunnyvale vice mayor in January, replacing Linda Sell and serving a one-year term selected by the City Council. The vice mayor runs closed session meetings and study sessions and assumes mayoral duties in the mayor's absence. Mehlinger was the sole candidate, nominated by outgoing vice mayor Sell, and was elected to the City Council in 2022 as the city's second openly queer councilmember. He previously chaired Livable Sunnyvale and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission. Mehlinger attracted public attention after receiving insulting texts from a rival campaign and has been described by residents as sincere, collaborative, and committed. He cited the weight of the oath amid concerns about public officials and referenced the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
